Ottawa heart surgeon and retired senator, Wilbert Keon, has been nominated to chair the Champlain Local Health Integration Network, the agency that doles out provincial funding to Eastern Ontario's major healthcare agencies.
Keon founded the University of Ottawa Heart Institute and was its chief executive officer for 30 years. He served as a senator until last spring.
In the Senate, Keon pushed the government to invest more money and effort on preventative health care, such as the promotion of nutrition and fitness.
The Champlain LHIN covers the area from Algonquin Park to the Quebec border and has a budget of $2.25 billion.
Keon will be joined by former city councillor Alex Munter who will serve as the agency's chief executive officer.
