Transportation and Infrastructure Minister John Baird says there's federal money to build a new sports stadium in Ottawa; the city just needs to ask for the funding.

But before that happens, city officials need to decide where to build, and which plan they want to fund.

There are currently two local groups competing for the chance to build a stadium in the capital.

Ottawa 67's owner Jeff Hunt is behind one of plans which would bring CFL football back to Lansdowne Park.

The other proposal is backed by Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk, who wants to build a soccer stadium near Scotiabank Place and bring Major League Soccer to the capital.

Baird, the MP for Ottawa-Nepean, says he'll move the city to the front of the line for infrastructure money and make sure Ottawa gets its fair share of the cash.

Earlier this week, city manager Kent Kirkpatrick said taxpayers must decide between building a new stadium or moving forward with other infrastructure plans, including revitalizing Ottawa's public transit.
