"Your kindness and support in our time of need has comforted us greatly," said Anna Korutowska. "To the people of Ottawa whom Eric proudly served, thank you for the incredible outpouring of generosity and condolences."
She said her husband, who was slain Dec. 29 after stepping out of his cruiser in the Ottawa Civic Hospital parking lot, would have been "deeply honoured by your tribute to him and the assistance you have provided for us."
His death and funeral drew coverage from across Canada as thousands of police officers and primary responders marched across the city in honour of his life.
'We all came together'
Ottawa police chief Vern White said in a statement that his force has been overwhelmed with kind messages.
"The turnout from the community was extraordinary," he added. "It was overwhelming to see young and old, and especially the school children with their signs of support and salutes.
"We all came together to grieve as a community. It certainly attests to the respect the city has for Eric, his family and the police service. Thank you."
Discussions are now underway on how to further honour the life of Czapnik, White added.
Const. Kevin Gregson, a suspended RCMP officer, is charged with first-degree murder in relation to Czapnik's death.
