The company who says it can turn trash into energy made headway in a deal with the City of Ottawa Monday afternoon when the environment committee approved the heavily-debated proposal.

Plasco wants to build a permanent facility that will take up to 300 tonnes of residential waste per day. It's a 20 year deal worth $120 million.

Plasco's CEO Rob Bryden says the city is taking little risk and reminded councillors the pilot project meant an investment of $52 million to city coffers.

While supporters of the proposal boast the technology means no harmful gases will be emitted into the air and it's an alternative method of generating energy, opponents argue it is unproven technology.

The proposal now needs to receive a final go-ahead by city council.
