Ottawa city council approved a new contract for OC Transpo drivers Wednesday, more than a year after the union voted to go on strike in the dead of winter.

Drivers got their first look at the deal earlier this week and will vote on it Thursday and Friday.

The city reached an agreement with Amalgamated Transit Union local 279 last week.

The deal would give drivers guaranteed eight-hour shifts, up from 7.5 hours.

Although drivers will still be able to work overtime, the way it's calculated would be adjusted.

"The union leadership has worked out something. There's give and take on both sides. But I think we're making steps to realign our workplace," said Coun. Alex Cullen, chair of the city's transit committee.

Mayor Larry O'Brien applauded both sides after the tentative agreement was reached last week.

Although the union called the deal "a fair and reasonable agreement", not all drivers support it.

The two sides have been at odds since the 53-day transit strike ended in late January 2009.
