A 59-year-old woman has been charged with fraud for allegedly trying to control the finances of an elderly Ottawa man under her care.

Ottawa police say the woman allegedly posted an ad on a seniors website looking for a live-in caregiver's job, and was hired by a relative of an 89-year-old man.

A few days later the man's bank told his family about some suspicious activity involving his account. Bank officials also alerted family members that a woman was attempting to gain power of attorney over the man's finances.

Carolyn Woods is charged with fraud under $5,000. Police say she has a similar caregiver ad circulating identifying herself as Carilyn Chrisante.

Woods will appear in court on May 7.

It's the second time in a month that Ottawa police have charged someone with abusing the trust of a senior citizen.
