Although residents in Barrhaven won't be getting light rail as part of the city's new transit plan, they will be getting a $52.6-million transitway extension.

The project is being funded by all three levels of government and will serve residents who live in neighbourhoods in Jockvale and Fallowfield in the city's south end.

"This southwest transitway project will create jobs, help people to get to work and deliver real results for the residents of Barrhaven and Nepean-Carleton," said Conservative MP Pierre Polievre.

The project will include more than two kilometres of bus-only lanes, completing the transitway link between the park and ride parking lots at Fallowfield and Strandherd Park. Plans also include several underpasses and a six-lane bridge.

Construction on the project is expected to be complete by March 2011.
