Massena, New York - The border closure at Cornwall Island continues to cause lengthy detours and inconveniences for residents on both sides of the St. Lawrence River.

Authorities have no plan to reopen the crossing, which was shut down Monday due to tension between Akwesasne Mohawks and the Canada Border Services agency over plans to arm agents with firearms.

Some Canadian staff at Massena Memorial Hospital have moved away from their families in order to continue working.

"I don't like being away from home this long. I'd rather go home every night if I could with my family," said Cornwall resident Bertha Wilson, a nurse staying with a friend across the river.

Paul Gathien and his wife took the longest drive they've ever needed from their Cornwall home to an American mall.

"It usually takes five minutes to get over here, but this morning we went by way of Dundee, Que.," he said. "There were no signs to indicate the proper route, so it took us about two hours."

But not everyone even knows about the roadblock itself.

"We're going camping in upstate New York, and we were going to take the Cornwall bridge, and we were lucky we saw the signs coming over," said Toronto resident Phil Ammon. "If not we would have had to backtrack and hour and a half."
