GATINEAU, Que. -- Quebec provincial police say two teenagers are dead after a three-vehicle collision near Gatineau, Que.

Police say a compact car tried to pass a pickup truck in a single lane (on Highway 315 in Cheneville, Que.) at about 10:30 p.m. Friday night.

Police say the driver wasn't able to pass in front of the pickup truck because there was an oncoming car in the opposite lane and he attempted to return to the lane but struck the rear bumper of the pickup truck, which crashed into the oncoming car.

A 19-year-old woman and an 18-year-old man in the pickup truck were critically injured as a result of the crash and police say they later died in hospital.

Three people were injured in the other vehicle, with police saying one of them receiving "major injuries," while the driver of the compact car was uninjured in the crash. Police say speed may have been a factor in the collision but they don't believe alcohol was involved.

Investigators say they'll speak with the driver of the compact car to determine if charges will be laid and roads remained closed in the area on Saturday afternoon.
