OTTAWA -- Three Ottawa police officers are scheduled to appear in court today in connection with an explosion during a training exercise last year.

Police and Ottawa paramedics were conducting a training exercise at an abandoned home on June 18, 2014 that involved the use of explosives.

During the exercise, paramedics Craig MacInnes and Reid Purdy were seriously injured.

The Special Investigations Unit later charged Sgt. Martin Rukavina and Constables Serge Clement and Carl Grimard with one count each of criminal negligence causing bodily harm and breach of duty with regard to an explosive substance.

The SIU investigates all incidents involving police that result in death, serious injury or sexually assault.

The Ministry of Labour has also laid charges against the city and the Ottawa police services board in connection with the incident. (CFRA)
