Canadians are nothing if not inventive when it comes to their snacks.

When comedian Martin Short announced a contest to find the next Lay’s potato chip flavour, the company received an amazing 630,000 submissions.

That’s a lot of chips!

So Angela Batley has already beaten the odds. The Ottawa woman is one of four finalists in the competition. Her flavour is based on a popular lunchtime combo – grilled cheese and ketchup flavoured chips.

Batley came up with the idea while sharing a bag of chips with her young son, who likes grilled cheese sandwiches with ketchup. “The contest was on the bag and we started playing around with combinations. Then it just kind of went from there,” she says. “And now I’m on a bag of chips.”

Batley’s name and picture adorn bags of chips on store shelves across the country. And now the chips are down. Batley’s chips must earn enough votes for her to win the grand prize of $50,000 and one percent of her flavour’s future sales.

Her competition includes Creamy Garlic Caesar chips from Vancouver, Perogy Platter chips from Edmonton, and Maple Moose chips from Isle Aux Morts, Newfoundland.

You can vote for your choice online at Lay's website, or by texting “VOTE” to 101010 from now to October 16, 2013.
