The Summit is over.

The sinkhole is filled.

It’s time to get the party started.

After a few noticeable distractions, Ottawa can now return its focus to its iconic Canada Day celebration.

Workers have been busy turning parts of downtown into a giant block party. They’ve erected an elaborate stage on Parliament Hill. Major’s Hill Park has been shut down while organizers set up a number of family activities, stages and food stands. Tents have sprung up offering everything from water bottle re-fills to first aid.

And hundreds of metres of fencing are lining the sidewalks, ready to be used to close off streets to accommodate the massive crowd. “We expect about 350-thousand people that come out to Canada Day celebrations, and I would say about one third are tourists from out of town," says Heritage Canada spokesperson, Katherine Cyr.

Many Canadians put Canada Day at Parliament Hill on their bucket list, something you have to experience at least once. Chris Brehault is making his first trip here from Regina. "I'm excited," he says. "I've heard this is literally the most amount of people you're ever going to see."

And it's not just a big party. It’s also big business for the city. Many downtown vendors will have their single busiest day on Canada Day. “Yes it’s a very good day, very busy day,” says Sabrina Allam who, with her mother, runs a T-shirt stand in the Byward Market. They are stocked and ready to go with dozens of red-and-white, Canada-themed t-shirts.

"They're filling our hotels. They're eating in our restaurants. They're visiting our museums, taking our tours," says Ottawa Tourism’s Jantine Van Kregten of the thousands of visitors who come to Ottawa for Canada Day.

If you’re heading to the Hill for the day, organizers caution you to check the forecast and dress for the weather, bring a water bottle, and leave the dog at home.

The mainstage show starts at noon and repeats at 7:30 p.m. Performers include Metric, Alex Cuba, Indian City and Coleman Hell. The famous Canada Day fireworks over Parlliament Hill are scheduled for 10 p.m. For a complete schedule of events, click here.
