A 30-year-old Ottawa woman has been charged with two counts of animal cruelty after several cats were found dead in a Vanier apartment.

The Ottawa Humane Society charged Jamie-Lee Frizell on Wednesday after an investigation into a series of incidents over the summer.

Three dead kittens were found in Frizell's apartment. A larger cat in poor health was also found and later needed to be put down.

"The extreme neglect of all the animals involved in this case is truly appalling," Miriam Smith, an inspector with the humane society said in a statement.

"Unfortunately, stories like this aren't new to us, as many people don't think twice about leaving animals behind when they move."

Frizell is scheduled to appear in court in mid-November. She faces a maximum fine of $10,000 and five years in prison.
