Two days after Ottawa police arrested a man for allegedly throwing a cat off a third-floor balcony, the Ottawa Humane Society says it's getting more animal cruelty cases than ever before.
"Definitely our investigation team is kept busier year after year," Tara Jackson of the Ottawa Humane Society told CTV Ottawa on Monday.
"People are becoming more aware of it and bringing it to our attention," she said.
Over the weekend, Ottawa police arrested a 24-year-old man who was wanted for allegedly breaking into his ex-girlfriend's apartment, beating one cat to death and throwing another off the balcony.
Jackson says any report of animal abuse is hard for her team to deal with.
"These calls are incredibly disturbing to staff here at the Humane Society because we're all animal lovers who all care about animals, and they're such helpless creatures and to think of anybody doing that to an animal is just beyond anything you can comprehend really," Jackson said.
Cat foster parent Jocelyn Robinson agrees and says animal cruelty is unnecessary.
"I would do the same for them as I would for my daughter," she said. "If they get sick I'd take them to the vet, they cuddle with you and they give you back unconditional love and they're wonderful."
