Ottawa Police have a new tool to nab those driving while disqualified, in stolen vehicles or wanted on a warrant.

The new Automatic Licence Plate Recognition system is installed on a fully marked Ford Explorer. The system can view up to 5,000 plates an hour and compares them to a provincial data base.

The officer is notified of any irregularities including:

  • Stolen licence plates
  • Driving while disqualified
  • Unlicenced driver
  • People wanted on a warrant

The system can also alert officers of vehicles involved in serious crimes like Amber Alerts, suspects in crimes and high-risk offenders.

Vehicles that are not flagged will be deleted from the database immediately but those that are will be kept on the system for five years.
