Friends on social media have identified 21-year-old Zac Mitchell as the man who drowned in a lake in Val-Des-Monts, Quebec on Saturday.

According to Facebook, Mitchell is from New Brunswick and was a student at Alongquin College.

Quebec Police say Mitchell took a "bold jump" into Lac St-Pierre around midnight Friday and never resurfaced. Police say the man's friends tried to save him but could not. Friends say it was a jump that Mitchell had done many times before.

Emergency responders searched the body of water until the early morning, suspending their efforts around 3:00 a.m. Police divers were back on the water mid-morning Saturday.

Mitchell's body was recovered around noon Saturday, some 12 hours after he disappeared.

Police are still investigating the circumstances around his death.
