The man accused of killing his mother in a fire on Woodridge Crescent Tuesday morning has been ordered to undergo a 30-day in-custody psychiatric evaluation.

The judge made this order when 30-year-old Rene Goudreau appeared in court Wednesday morning.

Goudreau was arrested and charged with first-degree murder yesterday after his mother, Lucie Goudreau, died in a fire investigators say broke out in her bedroom at 90 Woodridge Cres.

Emergency crews were called to the Bayshore-area building around 2:30 yesterday morning. Neighbours tell CTV the victim had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and was often seen using an electronic wheelchair.

Ottawa police say it is Ottawa’s sixth homicide for the year.

Goudreau’s next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 28.
