Drivers will soon be able to use more kinds of off-road vehicles on the shoulder of public roads.
Starting July 1st, 2015 riders will be able to use two-ups, side-by-side ATVs, and utility terrain vehicles on the shoulder of some public roads.
The province is driving the new regulations, but municipalities will have to pass by-laws allowing off-road vehicles on municipal roads and highways.
The City of Ottawa approved a by-law for Osgoode Ward on a trial basis and whether it will be expanded or changed will be reviewed when it expires in November.
The government also announced a new requirement that all riders - including passengers -- wear a helmet, and use a seatbelt or foot rest where applicable.
"Our government recognizes the importance of a vibrant, sustainable and safe power sports sector in Ontario, and we support providing Ontarians with more options to safely explore our vast province," said Steven Del Duca, Minister of Transportation, in a statement.
Tickets will not be issued until September 2015.
