Police have charged a 19-year-old driver following last week's collision with a tow truck driver on Highway 417.

19-year-old Zoya Flick of Smiths Falls has been charged for having improper tires.

Police are now reminding drivers that tires must be replaced when the tread is less than 1.5 millimeters deep or when tread-wear indicators touch the road. Vehicles that weigh more than 4,500 kilograms should replace their front tires when tread is less than three millimeters deep.

The collision between a vehicle and tow truck driver happened on August 26th, 2015 on Highway 417 eastbound near the Palladium Road overpass.

The 45-year-old tow truck operator was responding to an earlier two vehicle collision and was out of his truck and on the side of the highway when he was hit by a passing vehicle.  Paramedics responded just before 5pm and said the driver suffered life-threatening injuries including head and abdominal trauma.

A 30-year old man sitting in a parked vehicle on the side of the highway was also hurt.  He was not wearing a seatbelt inside the car.

The man is currently in critical condition in hospital.

There are new rules of the road in effect that make it mandatory to move-over and slow down when a tow truck is on the shoulder or side the road. Drivers who disobey the law will face a fine of $490 and will lose 3 demerit points.
