Bad choices are responsible for a lot of hospital time in Ontario. The Ottawa hospital was part of a study that found unhealthy behaviours were responsible for one in three hospital visits for Ontario residents. The price tag for that unhealthy behavior is about 1.8 billion dollars a year. It accounts for 945, 000 hospital visits annually in the province.

Drinking, lack of exercise, unhealthy food and smoking are the culprits. Smoking accounts for the most hospital visits and tax dollar spending. " Smoking is the leading behaviour for hospitalization...in part because former smokers are at risk too, " says Dr Doug Manuel, lead author of the study conducted by the Ottawa Hospital research institute.

The study shows that improved prevention efforts could save Ontario taxpayers billions.
