Dozens of Almonte residents wearing red and chanting “save our river” arrived at the town hall Monday, eager to hear whether plans for a power plant in the centre of the town would be put on hold.

“To put something like that into the river would ruin it, not only in looks but environmentally,” said one resident.

A motion to delay construction for one year was put forward and will go to council next month.

However, the wording of the motion was changed from delaying construction for “one year” to “up to one year”.

It’s believed power generated from the proposed plant would be sold to the province. Many residents say a power plant would ruin the charm of the town and keep tourists away.
