A 40-year-old woman charged in a fatal hit-and-run that killed a Greely teenager is facing a new charge of manslaughter.
Alex Hayes was struck and killed when he was riding his bike home from his shift at the Foodland Grocery store in Greely on Sept. 9.
Police charged Samira Mohamed Daoud with the additional offence on Friday.
Police told CTV Ottawa it's rare to lay a manslaughter charge in a case that involves operation of a motor vehicle causing death.
Manslaughter is defined as any culpable homicide that is neither first- nor second-degree murder, according to Correctional Service Canada.
The charge carries a sentence of any term deemed appropriate by the judge, ranging from months to life in prison.
Daoud faces 13 other charges, including impaired driving, failing to stop at the scene of an accident causing death and driving while suspended. She remains in custody.
