Ottawa Public Health has confirmed that ongoing testing of mosquito pools in the city has detected the presence of West Nile Virus.
The public is being asked to take precautions to better protect themselves which includes:
- Reducing standing water sites around your home
- Cover rain barrels
- Applying mosquito repellent
- Avoid going out at dusk and at dawn
- wear light coloured clothing to cover up exposed skin
- wake sure screens on windows and doors are in good shape
There have been no confirmed human cases of West Nile Virus in Ottawa so far this year.
West Nile Virus can cause serious illness in a small number of cases, especially with the elderly and people with weakened immune systems.
