A five-car CN freight train derailment early Wednesday morning disrupted train service for thousands of Via Rail passengers travelling between Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal.

The derailment, which happened at about 3:30 a.m., blocked train tracks in both directions just west of Kingston, halting train travel in the eastern part of the province.

Via Rail officials say they were forced to put several passengers on buses until the train tracks were cleared late Wednesday afternoon.

While all other services were expected to resume operation, train service from Ottawa to Toronto was replaced by buses for the remainder of the day.

Officials say no injuries were reported and no hazardous materials were on board.
