Two Via Rail cars came off the tracks and 175 passengers were temporarily stranded Tuesday afternoon in Mallorytown, 25 kilometres west of Brockville.

The derailment happened when the Montreal-bound train hit a tractor trailer that was stuck on the tracks.

The driver of the big rig was able to safely escape his vehicle before the collision. Five train passengers suffered minor injuries in the crash.

The stranded passengers are expected to be bused to Gananoque Tuesday night.

The derailment also caused delays to other Via Rail trains travelling the corridor between Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal.
