Train service is back to normal Wednesday after a Via Rail train carrying 175 passengers derailed on the main line between Toronto and Montreal Tuesday afternoon.

The derailment happened when the Montreal-bound train slammed into a tractor trailer that was stuck on the tracks in Mallorytown, about 25 kilometres west of Brockville.

"The tractor trailer had got stuck while crossing the rail crossing. He tried to flag down the passenger train but he was obviously unable," said Const. Kevin Lamacraft of the Ontario Provincial Police.

The collision sent two Via Rail cars off the tracks and the truck's trailer spinning into a ditch.

Ontario Provincial Police say two engineers, a crew member and seven passengers suffered minor injuries in the crash. The driver of the truck was able to safely escape his vehicle prior to the collision.

The Transportation Safety Board, Via Rail and CN Rail are now investigating the derailment.

"We will check the lights of the crossing. We will interview the truck driver. We will interview the train crew. We will actually talk to some of the people that were on the train," said Tom Griffiths of the Transportation Safety Board.

Police say no charges will be laid.
