Loved ones are now grieving two losses as another young man wounded in Saturday’s van crash has died of his injuries.
Friends said the man they know as "Lysol", age 21, died in hospital of injuries he suffered when he was thrown from a van in south Ottawa just after 2 a.m.
That crash also claimed the life of 16-year-old Julio Nibigirwe, who recently graduated from École secondaire Franco-Cité.
Mourners took to social media sites this weekend to share their grief over the deaths.
"Rip julio and Lysol (sic), still in shock. You will be missed,” tweeted user @emmyjaade.
"#RIP Julio and Lysol...september 8th 2012...worst day in uplands history...still can't belive this! (sic)" tweeted @bayanic10.
Police aren’t saying if speed, alcohol or weather factored into the crash, which happened when the 17-year-old driver lost control and left the road.
Cliff Chan, who runs a nearby bed and breakfast, said family members of the driver had gathered at the crash site earlier Sunday.
“I think they're just trying to seek some answers as to what had happened and for some of them it was hitting them quite hard," Chan said.
"This is a pretty tragic time for them and it's still very fresh for them."
Nibigirwe’s former vice-principal and one of his teachers were also at the crash scene today.
They said councillors will be at his former school on Monday if students want to talk.
