The City of Ottawa is reviewing its pool safety procedures following the death of an eight-year-old at a swimming pool in Ottawa's west end over the weekend.
Ottawa police say the girl suffered "medical distress" while she was at a birthday party at the Kanata Leisure Centre at about 8 p.m. Saturday.
Lifeguards gave the girl CPR until paramedics arrived and were able to revive her. She was then transported to the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario where she died a short time later. The child's name has not been released.
Although a coroner is investigating whether the girl drowned or suffered from an injury or illness, city staff says it's not going to take any chances.
"We're basically reviewing every aspect of this incident from beginning to end, seeing what every person who was involved, what their actions were and so forth, and see if there's any lesson to be learned from this,' Ottawa recreation manager Gilles Parent told CTV Ottawa.
Kanata Leisure Centre houses one of three city-run wave pools in Ottawa. More than 500 swimmers visit the Kanata pool every day.
