Plasco Energy Group Inc.'s waste-to-energy plant received a gold star from the federal and provincial governments on Thursday.

"Plasco Energy is an excellent example of companies that promotes sustainable energy for Ontario's future, while fostering a healthy, cleaner and more prosperous Canada," said Minister of Natural Resources Lisa Raitt.

Sustainable Development Technology Canada announced that Plasco's technology, converting trash into energy, has reached completion. SDTC contributed a total of $9.5 million to the project.

"Funding during the critical development and demonstration phases helps to de-risk clean technologies like Plasco's," said SDTC President and CEO Vicky J. Sharpe. "They can attract downstream investors and ultimately get into the market."

The Ottawa based company spent four years developing its high-heat waste conversion methods. Now, with the government's approval, president Rod Bryden says it will be easier to build new plants around the world.

Plasco currently operates a test facility on Trail Road in Ottawa's west end.
