A woman in her eighties has become the second Ottawa resident to die of swine flu.

Ottawa's associate medical officer of health said the woman, who had underlying medical conditions, died on Wednesday.

A teenaged boy was the first Ottawa resident to die of swine flu on June 23. He also had underlying medical conditions.

So far, more than 350 people in the capital have been treated for swine flu.

Residents are being reminded to take precautions to protect themselves from the virus, such as frequently washing their hands and coughing or sneezing into a sleeve.

Symptoms of swine flu may include:

  • fever
  • cough
  • shortness of breath
  • muscle aches
  • fatigue
  • severe headache
  • sore throat
  • lack of appetite
