An Ottawa police officer has been ordered to resign within seven days or face dismissal following an investigation into an off-duty altercation.
Terence Kelly, a retired deputy chief from York Regional Police, handed down the ruling at a disciplinary hearing on Monday.
The resignation order comes after Const. Jeffrey Gulick pled guilty to discreditable conduct in January stemming from an incident that occurred while he was off-duty in May 2008.
Gulick was charged under the criminal code with one count of mischief; four counts of assaulting a peace officer; two counts of uttering death threats; one count of escaping lawful custody; and one count of possession of a weapon dangerous to public peace.
He was convicted in February 2009 of all criminal code charges except for three counts of assaulting a peace officer.
Gulick has 30 days to appeal the decision. He was suspended from duty with pay in May 2008.
