Ottawa Police are investigating after a man was shot dead in Lowertown early Sunday morning.
Residents reported hearing several gunshots around 4 a.m. Sunday. Gilles Sarault says he heard the shots, then what sounded like a car driving off.
"I was shaking a bit," he says. "Then I saw a guy laying down on the floor, well on the ground."
Ottawa Police say they were called to an apartment in the 200 block of St. Andrew Street shortly before 4 a.m after reports a man had been shot. The victim was rushed to hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
The man has since been identified as 19-year-old Tarique Leger of Montreal. It's unknown at this point whether Leger was visiting the capital or had recently become a resident.
Leger is the 9th homicide victim of 2016, and the 7th gun-related death of the year.
One neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, says she never expected her street to be the scene of a homicide.
"I didn't expect to wake up and see this this morning," she says pointing to the crime scene. "We heard the sirens last night, but you just never think that's what you are going to wake up to."
Police continue to investigate. No arrests have been made.
