One billion litres of sewage has been dumped into the Ottawa River so far this year.

The latest sewage spill, which was recorded in the last 24 hours, pushed the volume of sewage over the one billion mark.

The City of Ottawa is currently forced to dump water waste into the river during rain storms due to the lack of sewer capacity.

A $100-million program to upgrade sewers and technology is expected to cut down on the number of spills in the future.

Ontario's environment commissioner Gord Miller said earlier this month that the city is on the right track.

He said if plans are implemented correctly, sewage spills into the Ottawa River should be a thing of the past within three years.
