Man sentenced for beating Breezy the dog

Steven Helfer, 24, was sentenced today to 2 years for the near-death beating of a dog last October.

Helfer pleaded guilty to beating Breezy , a 2-year-old Labrador/Shepherd cross, with a metal shovel and leaving her for dead in a dumpster.

In her sentencing report today Justice Ann Alder said, "His actions towards Breezy are deplorable, barbaric, and cruel."

Helfer will get time and half credit for pre-trial custody. As of today, his sentence is another 361 days.

Upon his release, he will serve three years probation, and a 25 year ban from owning or having custody of a pet.

  Breezy found a new home with a retired couple from Gatineau, identified only as John and Sheila. They say they have twenty years of experience owning rescue dogs.

  For months, Breezy had been recovering at the Human Society from a brutal attack in October that left her clinging to life.

  Breezy undergoes extensive therapy with the Humane Society.
