Breezy, the Labrador-shepherd mix beaten with a shovel and left for dead Oct. 16, had dental surgery Tuesday to repair teeth broken in the attack and appears to be regaining her trust in people, according to staff at the Ottawa Humane Society.
They say she is eating well, wagging her tail and has bonded with some of her caregivers, greeting them when they come to take her for short walks.
Veterinarians say they don’t know whether they can save one of Breezy’s eyes, which was severely damaged in the attack.
24-year-old Steven Helfer of Ottawa has been charged with a number of serious offences including assault with a weapon and willfully causing unnecessary pain/suffering or injury to an animal.
The Ottawa Humane Society has created a special page for Breezy where the public can contribute to the cost of her care.
