Breezy the dog has finally found a new home.
The Ottawa Humane Society has adopted out the 2-year-old Labrador/Shepherd cross to a retired couple from Gatineau, identified only as John and Sheila. They say they have twenty years of experience owning rescue dogs.
It marks the end of a story that has touched the heart of thousands. Breezy first came to public attention last October when she was viciously beaten and left for dead in a garbage dumpster. She suffered severe injuries to her chest and head. OHS Executive Director Bruce Roney says the attack has left her blind in one eye.
Breezy has spent months recovering from her injuries at the Ottawa Humane Society. The staff gathered at the door to see her leave with her new owners.
Breezy’s previous owner, 24-year-old Steven Helfer has pleaded guilty to charges stemming from the October attack. He awaits sentencing in April. Over one hundred thousand people have signed a petition asking that Helfer be sentenced to the fullest extent of the law, which includes a 5-year prison term.
