Breezy the dog, who was viciously beaten last fall, is now ready for adoption.
The Ottawa Humane Society says the young Labrador-Retriever mix is well enough to move into a permanent home.
For the past four months, Breezy has been recovering at the centre from a brutal attack in October that left her clinging to life.
She was beaten with a shovel and left for dead in a dumpster.
24-year-old Steven Helfer has pleaded guilty in connection to the attack that left Breezy with multiple injuries, including serious gashes and skull fractures.
She may also lose an eye as a result of the attack.
"The eye right now, she can’t see out of it, but the veterinarian is still keeping track to see if her eye is going to be removed or not," said Dominique Lalonde, coordinator for Canine Services at the Ottawa Humane Society.
If Breezy does lose her eye, she may be left with some depth perception issues.
"Anything that approaches her quickly, she might take a few steps back and take a little more time to get comfortable," Lalonde said.
Helfer is expected to be sentenced in the spring.
Humane Society staff hope by then, Breezy will be settled in a new home, with a new owner committed to her training and proper care.
In a release on their website, the Humane Society specified Breezy will need to move into a detached, adults-only home with no small animals, including cats.
"The detached home is going to be needed because she does tend to bark when she is left alone," Lalonde said. "She’s still not comfortable being left alone and does need somebody with her for most of the day."
Breezy's owner will also preferably have experience caring for dogs.
