A two month old kitten is being dubbed “Lucky” after being brought back from the brink of death. The stray was found frozen inside a shed last night. Thanks to a Good Samaritan and a quick thinking vet, little Lucky is alive tonight. But his brush with death serves as a warning to others about pets and the cold.

At two months old, there's not much protecting the little guy from the cruel elements of winter.  But that's exactly where he was, when he was found nearly frozen to death.

The Ottawa Humane Society says it was a Good Samaritan who found the kitten in a shed last night. The temperature outside was below zero. The kitten was freezing and suffering from severe hypothermia. His rescuer took him to the Ottawa Veterinary Hospital where a vet declared him dead; then decided to try CPR.

‘And this previously dead kitten came to life amazingly,’ says Bruce Roney, the executive director of the Ottawa Humane Society, ‘and he helped regulate his body temperature with heating pads. If it had been even a few minutes later, he would be dead.’

The vet then gave him medicine to keep his heart beating and hooked him up to fluids. He's now in the critical care unit at the Ottawa Humane Society; warm and safe. Roney says though Lucky was a stray, his experience is a lesson for all pet owners.

‘That's our big concern,’ Roney says, ‘we really want to get message out that you don't want a pet left outside in this weather and if you are taking your pet for a walk, make sure it is for a short duration.’

Lucky isn't strong enough to be up for adoption yet but he is well on his way.
