Two fishers avoided disaster on Saturday when their pickup truck fell through the ice on the Ottawa River near Petrie Island's fishing community.

The two-door GMC broke through at about 11:30 a.m. while driving eastbound between fishing huts. The occupants escaped without injury.

Fire and police crews cordoned off the area and warned other fishing enthusiasts. They will attempt to extract the vehicle on Sunday.

Temperatures were still below freezing in Ottawa during the morning incident, though warm airs were sweeping through and thawing other parts of Ontario.

The incident happened the same day one fisherman died and 130 others were rescued from an ice floe that broke away from Lake Erie's shoreline in U.S waters near Cleveland, Ohio.
