Highway 401 has reopened near Belleville, Ont., about 17 hours after a fatal crash early Thursday morning.

The three-vehicle crash happened just before 6:30 a.m. and involved two transport trucks and a passenger vehicle, police said in a news release.

One of the transport truck drivers was pronounced dead at the scene and another was taken to hospital with serious injuries. Images from a fire chief at the scene showed debris scattered across the highway.

The highway was closed in both directions between the County Road 49 and Shannonville Road exits for much of the morning, scuttling travel plans for many drivers.

Around 1 p.m., one westbound lane reopened to traffic, but the rest remained closed for cleanup.

Police said just before midnight that all lanes of the highway had reopened.
