Elective surgeries will resume in the Outaouais area Thursday after being cancelled due to a drug shortage earlier this week.

The drugs in short supply included brands of morphine, antibiotics and sedatives and were used to treat everything from pain in cancer patients to abnormal heart rhythms.

The shortage stemmed from a production problem at Quebec drug maker Sandoz. The company suspended some production after being cited for various safety and production deficiencies by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The decision to cancel the surgeries was made Monday. In total, 65 surgeries were canceled.

Officials said that patients who had their surgery postponed would be given priority in the coming days.
