Dozens of elective procedures will be cancelled across Gatineau as the result of a drug shortage in the Outaouais.

According to Gatineau health officials, 30 procedures were cancelled Monday and say none will be performed in the city until Wednesday the earliest.

Dr. Gui Morisette tells CTV the cancellations were necessary to ensure there were enough drugs to perform more serious procedures.

The shortage stems from a production problem at a manufacturing company in Boucherville, Que. The generic drug company was forced to suspend production of some of its pharmaceutical products after the American Food and Drug Administration flagged some problems with the company's production methods.

The drugs produced by Sandoz Inc. are used to treat cancer and gravely ill people.

Sandoz is in the process of upgrading its facility.
