A family of four lost their home but quick thinking by a neighbour saved the family dog from a house fire in Stittsville this morning.

Firefighters responded to the call at 5 Bell Street just before 8 am.

The blaze began on the outside wall of the home but flames eventually raced through the second floor and the attic.

A neighbour opened one of the doors of the home to let the family dog out.

There was no one else inside the home when the fire ignited.

A family of four has been displaced.

The Ottawa Fire Service says worn electrical wiring in the gazebo is the suspected cause of the fire.

Damage is estimated at $475 thousand.
