Cornwall police have issued a community safety alert following an alleged sexual assault on a 15-year-old girl Friday morning.

Police say the assault happened when a man approached a girl who was walking on Marlborough Street near Seventh Street East at about 8:15 a.m.

Police say the man struck up a conversation with the girl and then grabbed her, pulled her close and touched her inappropriately.

Police say the victim was able to escape and the man fled south down Marlborough Street.

Man described as white male in early 20s

The man is described as an unshaven white male in his early 20s. He is about 5'5" with a muscular build and short dark brown hair.

He was wearing a black baseball cap, large sunglasses, a black sweatshirt and black jeans at the time of the incident.

Reduce your risk

Police say people can reduce the risk of becoming a victim by:

  • Walking assertively in the centre of sidewalks
  • Staying in well-lit areas
  • Avoiding walking by alleys and doorways
  • Being aware of your surroundings

Police say the best thing to do if you suspect you're being followed is to cross the street, go to the nearest home or business and call the police.
