Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson is expected to miss Game 3 of the team's opening-round playoff series against the New York Rangers with post-concussion symptoms.

Reports indicate the veteran forward won't play Monday in the team's first home playoff game in almost two years.

It's unknown who will take his place in the lineup.

Alfredsson took a hit to the head from Rangers forward Carl Hagelin in the second period of Saturday night's 3-2 overtime win and didn't return.

The winger took the morning skate on Monday and said at the time he would be a game-time decision.

NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan told a New York radio station that Hagelin's three-game suspension could be reduced on appeal if Alfredsson plays Monday, since its length was affected by the fact he was injured.

The Senators haven't won a playoff game at Scotiabank Place since the 2007 Stanley Cup Finals, a 5-3 win over Anaheim on June 2.

Sens get more discipline from the league

The Senators and forward Zenon Konopka also got somewhat of a surprise fine Monday afternoon, after the league said he verbally abused a Rangers player during a live, pre-game NBC television interview on Saturday.

Konopka has been fined $2,500 and the team has to pay $10,000.

Senators defenceman Matt Carkner is out for Game 3 after fighting an unwilling Brian Boyle just over two minutes into Saturday's game.

Also out of commission? The Red Zone outside of Scotiabank Place, shut down by a wind warning with gusts up to 100 kilometres an hour.

If open, there surely would have been fans with new Senators jerseys, shirts and hats after SportChek gave away about a thousand pieces of merchandise in downtown Ottawa Monday morning.
