Three people should be back home for Christmas after their tree caught fire just outside downtown Ottawa Friday night.

The Ottawa Fire Services said they responded to 71 Russell Avenue in Sandy Hill at 8:50 p.m. Friday, where they found smoke on the second floor of a two-storey, three-unit building.

Ottawa paramedics said they treated a 26-year-old man for first and second-degree burns to his arms and back, then took him to hospital in stable condition.

Two men in their twenties were treated on the scene for smoke inhalation, but didn't want to be taken to hospital.

Fire crews said the tree fire in the living room caused $40,000 damage to the building and $10,000 to its contents.

They said the three people should be back in their home on Saturday.

This fire comes after a mother and her two children were left homeless when their tree ignited in Rockland on Thursday.
