Trauma doctors at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario say proper use of life-jackets is key to keeping children safe this holiday weekend.

Hospital officials say the May long weekend usually keeps the emergency room extremely busy with trauma cases.

They say head injuries continue to be the most serious type of injury affecting children and are urging parents to take some important precautions.

Parents can help keep their kids safe by:

  • Making sure kids wear helmets while cycling and skating
  • Staying close to children while they play in and around water

In 2007-2008, CHEO had 53,000 visits to the emergency room.
