Skaters looking to stretch their legs on the Rideau Canal now have almost the whole skateway to look forward to. On Friday, the National Capital Commission opened up all but the area between the Laurier Bridge and the National Arts Centre.

Mild weather kept most of the skateway under wraps later in the season than usual.

The NCC advises that skaters can glide safely for 7.4 kilometres from Hartwell Locks near Carleton University, into Dow's Lake and as far as the Laurier Bridge.

Only 400 metres remain to be opened. No date has yet been set, but the NCC advises that ice must be at least 30 centimetres thick before this can happen.
