The man accused of killing a young Ottawa woman in a south-end hotel room will undergo a 30-day psychiatric assessment to determine if he can be held criminally responsible for his actions.
Patrick Dunac, 34, has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of 23-year-old Jessica Riopelle.
The psychiatric assessment was ordered during a brief court appearance on Wednesday. Dunac will be moved to a secure wing of the Royal Ottawa Hospital for the evaluation.
Riopelle was found dead in a hotel room at the Saadé International Inn in south-Ottawa Saturday night. Autopsy results confirm she was beaten and stabbed.
The complex includes a Chinese restaurant and a strip club, where Riopelle worked as an exotic dancer.
Police believe Dunac held several positions at the complex, ranging from helping run the strip club to cleaning the inn.
