A 24-year old Ottawa man is dead, a victim of Tuesday morning's horrific crash on Vanier Parkway and McArthur Avenue.
It’s believed Alex Cross had just left work when he and his 21-year old passenger were passing through the intersection around 1:30am in Cross’ Honda Accord.
Cross’ Honda was struck by a Pontiac G6 driven by a 37-year old man.
The Pontiac had been the subject of a police chase before the crash. Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is looking into whether the Ottawa Police played a role in the crash.
An SIU spokesperson says a marked Ottawa Police car tried to pull-over the Pontiac in the area of George and Cumberland Streets in the Byward Market around 1:15am. The Pontiac fled. A brief police chase ensued, but then was quickly called off. A short time later it’s believed the Pontiac slammed into the Honda at the intersection of McArthur Avenue and the Vanier Parkway.
The SIU confirms the 24-year old Honda driver, identified by friends and family as Alex Cross, died Wednesday in hospital.
Cross’ passenger, a 21-year old woman, remains in hospital with serious injuries.
On Cross’ Facebook page an outpouring of grief. One friend writes, “I want you back I can’t take this” another says “it all seems so surreal. I’m at a loss for words… I keep asking myself why?”.
The driver of the Pontiac G6 remains in critical condition.
